Fie has volunteered on three CHICKS breaks in the past, although this will be her first Christmas with us, and she’s really looking forward to it: “I believe it will allow the children the chance to be simply that - children. They’ll be able to enjoy all the fun elements of Christmas - games, crafts, Christmas movies, the excitement of preparing for Father Christmas to come, the enjoyment of sharing a meal with a group of people on Christmas day and going to sleep tired and happy every night. Hopefully it will provide an opportunity for them to forget the things that worry them at home and simply enjoy Christmas.”
Fie’s favourite memory of CHICKS came from one of her first visits: “I remember one of the children saying as we drove back from the Coastal retreat to the train station, quite quietly, 'so is this is what they call the countryside'. I realised then that, for some of these children, what I would have always taken for granted just isn't the same for them.”
Today’s the day our volunteers will be arriving at our retreat, to prepare for the Christmas break ahead of the children’s arrival tomorrow! Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see snippets of the Christmas break - and of course we'll be sharing more stories with you here on our website after the festive season too.
